Korea World Cup Soccer

Soccer is crazy popular in Korea. Known as he Red Devils, the team is currently playing in the World Cup hoping to see glory. Ok, I know next to nothing about soccer but Tristan, Andrea and I decided to go to downtown Seoul with 300,000 other fans to sit on the main street and watch the game on the giant outdoor screens used for advertising. The Game started here at 10pm from a German feed so we did not get home until 2:30 am -- all of us of course have to work the next day.

Almost everyone was wearing red and most people had the red devil light up horns. Korea was losing 1-0 after the first half but we came back to win 2-1. Firworks going off everywhere, screaming fans jumping up and down, and people bangin thunder sticks were the highlights of the evening. When the game ended the streets went crazy -- I have never been in the middle of something like this -- everyone just started dancing singing and getting in those dancing lines or circles. They even have certain cheers like the ones at the Doosan Bears game I mentioned earlier.

This is me of course with Andrea on my right and Tristan in the Yellow -- we kidded him that gee the Canadian and the American are wearing Red Devil Korea shirts while he was wearing a Yellow top. The girls in front we met there and invited them to eat the chicken salad we brought.

After a goal was scored the Fireworks went off -- to the left (out of picture) is the massive video screen.

A picture of Andrea and a dressed up General -- he is supposed to be Yi Sun-sin (1545–98), an admiral who invented the "turtleboat," the first ironclad ship, and defeated the Japanese in every naval engagement of the Hideyoshi invasions, dying in the climactic battle. Apparently he never lost. He has a giant statue on the main street which I have a picture of but isn't great. I guess I'll have to watch another game.
